About Kellie
Kellie, a Baltimore native, is a vocal stylist formerly known as Doris Dow; 2003 Billie Holliday Vocal Competition 1st place winner. Performance venues include ArtScape, Lenox Lounge, Twins Jazz Club, Apollo Theater, Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute & Cultural Center, Sphinx Club, and Caton Castle. Grateful for the opportunity to be mentored by many jazz influencers such as Ruby Glover, Chico Johnson, Biddy Woods, Danny Mixon, Ron Jefferson, and Maxine V. Smith; Kellie’s love for Jazz became evident, as she continued to perform R&B.
With the support of elders, Kellie was able to refine her vocal training through traditional and classical music as a student of the Peabody Preparatory and Conservatory, The Baltimore School for the Arts, and Frederick Douglass High School under the instruction of Dr. Nathan Carter, Jean Carter, and Jewel Churn. A very shy teen, Kellie found her voice and love for gospel music at New Hope Baptist Church. Walter Byrd, music ministry leader introduced her to Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, which inspired a new perspective as an annual member of the COGIC Workshop Choir, hence becoming an original member of Guy Robinson and Light the World. Kellie is also a former member of the JHU Choral Society.
Kellie’s vocal talent extends into the theater to include performances with the Morgan State University (MSU) theater stage play “Divine Comedy”, David Talbert’s “Mr. Right Now”, and Off-Broadway theater production of “Mom’s Lady” written and directed by Clarice Taylor. As a music and theater instructor for YWCA Summer programs, Kellie took pride in fostering creativity within Baltimore’s youth communities and their families. As a background or lead vocalist; Kellie sings Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Pop, and Classical music with thoughtful invocation.
